 "Beneath the Surface" -- 2013 Teen Summer Reading Program Minimize

    REGISTRATION
      <Online Registration> is available beginning May 23. The program runs through July 27, and all participants must have a current Louisville Library card. Program packets are available in The Loft for Teens beginning June 1. The Teen program is open to students entering the 7th grade and above.

    ABOUT THE PROGRAM
    Go Beneath the Surface this summer to explore art, movies, books, contests, crafts, and your hidden talents. Whether you become immersed in a great novel, learn more about a topic of personal interest, explore new worlds, engage in online or digital reading opportunities, or participate in special programs, the Louisville Loft will have something for you. Each participant will receive a free reading record and special prizes for reading achievements.

Call or visit the teen website throughout the summer, or become a fan of the <Louisville Loft on Facebook> for information about special programs. We will be here all summer long, and we hope you will be, too!
    SCHEDULED EVENTS
     
  • MON, June 3 :: 5–8pm :: Teen Movie Night Kick-off Event
    "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journety" (PG-13). Kick off the Teen Summer Reading Program with an adventure that is out of this world. Following Bilbo and his dwarven friends on their quest while eating Hobbit snack and Dwarven Drinks.
     
  • WED, June 4 :: 4–4:45pm :: From Tombs to Treasures
    Use the investigative thinking processes of an archeologist with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Uncover the customs, culture, and everyday life of ancient Egypt. Conduct a mock excavation to explore the methods used in archeological dig sites.
     
  • SAT, June 8 :: 1–6pm :: Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons
    What is D&D? A worldwide pop culture phenomenon for thirty years, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D®) is a game played with books, paper and pencils. Players create characters that go on a journey together through a fantasy realm to discover treasure, fight monsters, and triumph over adversity. Teens love D&D because it’s exciting. Educators love D&D because it thrives on creativity, imagination, and cooperation(with a bit of math and reading thrown in). PERFECT for new and beginning players, this session will focus on character creation and the rules of combat.
     
  • Summer Writing Workshop with Maryanne Fantalis :: 1:30–3pm (pre-register)
    Four Sessions: Monday, June 10 & 17; Wednesday, June 12 & 19
    Throughout the course of this 4-part workshop, teen writers will learn about generating new ideas or getting unstuck, the different kinds of plots stories may have, building believable characters, how to decide on a point of view, and many other helpful and inspiring writing tips and tricks. It is hoped that teens will participate in all four parts of the workshop, as they build upon each other to form a comprehensive and fun writing course, but drop-ins with advance notice will be welcome also. Participants will receive their own writing journal.
     
  • TUE, June 18 :: 4–6pm :: Teen Anime Club (pre-register)
    Teens will be treated to a variety of Japanese-style snacks and an anime movie.
     
  • SUN, June 23 :: 1–5pm :: Dungeons and Dragons–The Journey Continues
    Gamers who attended the first introductory session (June 8th) are invited to continue their quest.
     
  • THUR, June 27 :: 2–4pm :: DIY Teen Spa Day (pre-register)
    Make a variety of soothing spa items including bath salts and lip balm and get recipes for easy DIY spa treatments. Snacks and materials will be provided.
