It’s fun, it’s free, it’s phonetically correct. As school starts early literacy is something that comes to mind. The American Library Association has indentified six components which prepare children to learn to read. We have six story times a week, so come join us!
- Know Letters WHY?
Children need to know the names of the letters and also the sounds they make. The same letters can also be written in different ways. This is called “letter knowledge.”
- Learn New Words WHY?
Children need to learn the names of things. This will help them communicate and recognize words when they begin reading. This is called “vocabulary.”
- Love Books WHY?
Children who enjoy books and view reading as a fun activity are more likely to want to learn to read. This is called “print motivation.”
- Play With Sounds WHY?
Children need to be able to hear and play with the different sounds that make up a word. This is called “phonological awareness.”
- Tell Stories WHY?
Children need to be able to describe things, tell about events in the order they happen, and re-tell stories. This is called “narrative skills.”
- Use Books WHY?
Children need to learn how we use books. They also need to know that print can be found all around us and that words have meaning. This is called “print awareness.”
